Pick up Truck rides of the 70's
Since when can't you ride on the back of pick up trucks ???
When I was a kid, after every little league game we would jump on the back of my step dad's pick up truck, and go over to Friendly's for ice cream. Nearly the whole team would pile in for the ride.
When we won the Championship, he drove us around town and through downtown honking his horn while we waived to everyone. Nobody got hurt. Nobody got sued. It was just a great time for us kids.
My how times have changed. I heard that it is now illegal to ride in the back of a pickup truck. When did this happen? Who the hell would pass such a law?
I know who, the same people who were riding on the back of the pick up truck with me. All of us now are in our late 30's or early 40's. And somehow, what was perfectly okay for us as kids, now is considered dangerous to kids. They are missing out on so many fun things by having their parents "protect" them every second of the day.
Can we make the bubble any bigger around kids today? Are they still allowed to sharpen pencils at the window sill in school like we did? Or is that also against the law. I don't dare ask.

this story remind my Pickup truck ride when I use to ride on the back of my pickup truck every weekend when my dad travel to our farm house.
I have lot of good bad memories with my truck. from child hood i love this monster trucks. & so I made this trucks my profession. I used to stay whole day with lots of trucks of various brand & companies.

I can't believe anyone would attempt to transport children in this manner. You cannot safeguard the life of an adult or animal when you place them on the back of a pickup. It is the height of lunacy and irresponsibility to do this with children.

Dave, I wish there were a lot of things that were still like the old days … but unfortunately we just have to react to the world we live in. There are thousands of crazy people on the roads, and if riding in the back of pickup trucks would legal I'm betting we'd see hundreds more deaths from it per year, probably a decent percentage of which would be children.

It is a pity, but eminently understandable, that these laws would be passed. Obviously you haven't heard of any of the cases where someone riding unsecured in the back of a pickup truck was thrown out after hard braking and killed ... I don't see the laws as ‘enlarging the bubble’, but simply a common sense response by people who love their children and recognise that dangers evolve. It’s not the 50s any more!

It's a pretty black and white view you take at the end … you've known about the law on compulsory wearing of seatbelts for some decades, why wouldn’t you expect that a law would be passed to prevent people riding in a vehicle in a place where there are no seatbelts?
